Ear Infections in Kids - A Mom’s Guide to Natural Comfort and Finding the Why

It’s bedtime. Everyone is finally settled. Then comes the crying, the ear tugging, and that little voice saying, “Mommy, my ear hurts.”

Oh, mama. There goes the sleep you were hoping for.

As a mom of four, I know how quickly your own plans disappear when one of your babies isn’t feeling well. You want to help them feel better, and when ear infections keep coming back, you want answers.

At Roots Wholistic Health in Waupaca, Wisconsin, that’s where we start: helping you understand what needs attention now and what might be contributing to the repeat infections.

Why Do Kids Keep Getting Ear Infections?

Think of the middle ear as a little room behind the eardrum. It has a small passageway—the eustachian tube—that helps move fluid out and keep pressure balanced.

In little ones, that passageway is smaller and more horizontal. Add a stuffy nose, a cold, or inflammation causing ongoing nasal allergies, and drainage can become harder. Fluid gets stuck, and if the immune system can't clear it, an infection follows.

So when the pattern is “cold, ear infection, repeat,” we want to look at what is happening around that drainage system. Is your child constantly congested? Snoring? Mouth breathing? Having trouble hearing even after the infection is gone? Those details matter.

Can Chiropractic Care Really Help Kids With Ear Infections?

This is a question we hear from parents.

At Roots, pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic care are what we do. We look at how your child moves, whether they have a strong preference for turning their head one way, and whether neck discomfort or restricted movement needs attention.

The spine and its surrounding muscles work together to protect the nervous system and support movement. Pediatric chiropractic assessments can help identify concerns in those areas and what kind of care is appropriate for your child’s age and needs.

Research shows that adjustments can help middle-ear fluid drain, release eardrum tension, and help activate the immune system, but it does not treat the infection itself.

Natural-health resources such as the ICPA, Pathways to Family Wellness, and Well Adjusted Babies encourage a broader look at children’s health. I appreciate that whole-child perspective, while recognizing that their chiropractic and nutrition explanations aren’t the only proven treatments for ear infections, and infections can require further assessment and treatment.

Your Child’s Nervous System and Immune System Work Together

Your child’s nervous system and immune system do communicate. They help coordinate responses to illness and inflammation. Think about your baby being squished in your belly for 9 months, going through labor and delivery, and then having to adapt to this new world...that's a lot of stress on their little spine. Their spine protects their spinal cord and that is where messages are sent from their brain to their body and vice-versa. Supporting your child's spinal motion and function, can help improve that communication to every organ, cell, and tissue in your child's body, including their ears!

Natural Earache Comfort Options You Can Try

You don’t have to sit helplessly watching your child hurt, or always fall back on Tylenol. There are simple ways to offer comfort while getting their ear checked.

Bring Out the Warm Washcloth

A comfortably warm washcloth against the outside of the ear may help ease the ache. Think cozy warmth, not hot. Check it against your own skin first and stay with your child.

Add a cuddle, a quiet room, and a favorite story. Sometimes the most useful thing in your wellness cabinet is you.

Earthley Earache Ease

Earthley Earache Ease is one of the ear-comfort products we like to discuss with families. It contains organic mullein leaf and organic extra-virgin olive oil and is recommended for occasional ear discomfort.

Before putting oil into a painful ear, have the ear examined and ask your child’s provider whether it’s appropriate. Skip it if there is a suspected ruptured eardrum or ear tubes.

Ear oil isn’t a proven treatment for a middle-ear infection. It stays on the outside of an intact eardrum, so it can’t reach fluid trapped behind it, but it can offer relief to an inflamed and painful ear canal.

What About Arnica?

You may have heard of homeopathic Arnica for soreness and bruising. It can temporarily help relieve ear pain, but does not treat an ear infection.

Ask your child’s provider before using it. Never put Arnica creams or oils inside the ear.

Keep Immune Support Simple

Offer regular feeds or age-appropriate fluids, make room for rest, and serve warm nourishing foods - here is one of my favorite Chicken and Rice soup recipes.

For babies, continue breast milk or goat's milk infant formula. For older kids, think protein, vegetables, and warm foods that are easy to chew.

Supplements with elderberry, echineacea, vitamin C, and zinc can also be helpful to support immune function.

Do We Really Need Another Antibiotic?

Sometimes, yes. Medication has a place, and a child who needs it shouldn’t have treatment delayed.

But some mild ear infections can improve with comfort care, chiropractic care, and immune support. Make sure to seek out a chiropractor that is trained in pediatric care. Here is a directory to find a pediatric-trained chiropractor in your area.

Recurring Ear Infections Mean It’s Time to Ask Why

If your little one keeps going through this, let’s look beyond the next earache.

Look at Feeding Habits

Bottle-feeding while lying flat can increase the risk of ear infections. During bottle feeds, hold your baby with their head supported and elevated. Avoid propping bottles or sending them to bed with one.

Notice Skin and Tummy Clues

Does your child also have eczema, rashes, vomiting, bloody poop, arching, colic, or discomfort after feeds? Mention those symptoms together.

Food allergies can sometimes contribute to eczema flares or other skin reactions. A rash around the mouth or in skin creases doesn’t automatically mean food sensitivity, but it can be a sign that your child's gut is struggling with something, and that can cause more inflammation throughout their body.

Keep a simple record of what you notice. We’re looking for useful patterns, not making every bite of food a suspect.

Could Cow’s Milk Protein Be an Issue?

A lot of babies have an immune reaction to cow’s milk proteins. They also may react to whey proteins in formula or small amounts of dietary dairy proteins passing into breast milk.

That is an immune reaction—not simply an inability to digest the protein. An alternative formula to look for one made with goat's milk, or A2 cow milk proteins. These are not as inflammatory to their little immune systems.

If skin, digestive, recurring sickness, or growth concerns suggest an allergy, ask your provider about an appropriate evaluation. Don’t start removing major foods or changing formula without a plan to keep your child well nourished.

Is That White Tongue Milk or Thrush?

A white tongue can be milk residue. White patches that don’t wipe away easily, especially inside the cheeks or on the gums, may be oral thrush.

If patches persist or feeding hurts, have them checked. Thrush needs its own attention, and can affect your baby's immune response.

Know When to Get Help

Have significant ear pain, drainage, worsening symptoms, or hearing changes checked. A baby under 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher should get prompt medical evaluation.

Redness or swelling behind the ear, an ear pushed outward, or a child who seems seriously uncomfortable needs immediate care.

Repeated infections, lingering fluid, or speech and hearing concerns may need a referral to an ENT for assessment and hearing testing. Those steps can be part of finding the why, too.
