My Favorite Sunny Travel Essentials as a Mom of 4

By Dr. Alyssa McPeak, DC, CFMP

Traveling with kids is one of my favorite ways to make memories as a family — beach days, pool days, sunshine, and slow time together. But as a mom of four, I’ve learned that the right travel essentials can make the difference between a stressful day at the beach, or a smooth, joy-filled one.

Over the years, I’ve simplified what we pack for sunny vacations to a handful of tried-and-true favorites that support safety, skin health, and easy mom life. If you’re heading somewhere warm, here are my go-to travel essentials.

One of my absolute must-haves is the Supergoop! powder SPF.

Why I love it as a mom:

  • Mess-free application

  • Easy for wiggly kids

  • Great for faces, ears, and scalps

  • Fits in purse or beach bag

  • Perfect for quick reapplication

This has been the easiest way I’ve found to keep my kids protected without the sunscreen battles.

Hats that actually stay on — game changer.

Chin-strap sun hats protect:

  • Face

  • Ears

  • Neck

  • Scalp

They’re especially essential for babies, toddlers, windy beaches, and boat days.

Rash guards are one of the simplest ways to reduce sun exposure and sunscreen load.

I love them because they:

  • Provide built-in UPF protection

  • Protect shoulders and back

  • Reduce reapplication needs

  • Allow longer water play safely

I always pack two per child so one can dry while the other is worn.

For younger swimmers, puddle jumpers add confidence and safety support in the water.

They help:

  • Maintain safe swim position

  • Reduce fatigue

  • Increase visibility

  • Build independence

(And yes — I still stay within arm’s reach.)

Nothing ends swim time faster than goggles that snag hair.

I always look for:

  • Soft silicone straps

  • Easy-adjust backs

  • Tangle-free designs

Comfort = happy swimmers = longer fun.

Even with good sun protection, skin can get dry and warm after long sun exposure.

A clean-ingredient aloe gel helps:

  • Soothe skin

  • Hydrate

  • Calm redness

  • Support skin repair

I avoid artificial fragrance, dyes, and petroleum ingredients.

A shaded home base at the beach is a lifesaver with kids.

I love a portable beach tent because it:

  • Provides instant sun shade

  • Creates a cool rest space

  • Protects babies and toddlers

  • Reduces total sun exposure

  • Gives kids a snack/quiet zone

It’s one of the best ways to prevent overtired, overheated beach meltdowns.

These are one of my favorite travel upgrades.

Sand-free towels:

  • Shake clean easily

  • Don’t trap sand

  • Dry quickly

  • Pack small

  • Stay comfortable

Less sand in bags, cars, and rentals = happier mom.

Packing for multiple kids means bulky suitcases fast. Vacuum or compression storage bags are one of my favorite packing hacks.

They help:

  • Compress clothing to save space

  • Organize outfits by child

  • Separate clean and dirty clothes

  • Keep items dry

  • Fit more in carry-ons

Especially helpful for bulky items like sweatshirts, pajamas, and beachwear.

Bulky beach toys are hard to travel with — collapsible ones are genius.

They:

  • Flatten in luggage

  • Save space

  • Keep kids entertained

  • Encourage sensory play

  • Work for sand or water

Perfect for flights and beach days.

Airports, taxis, rental cars — car seats go everywhere when traveling with kids.

A travel car seat cover or bag:

  • Protects from dirt and germs

  • Makes carrying easier

  • Shields during baggage check

  • Keeps straps contained

  • Extends seat life

It’s one of those items you don’t realize you need until you travel without it once.

Traveling with kids means laundry, even on vacation. Lightweight detergent sheets are a game-changer — and our favorite is Molly’s Suds.

They:

  • Pack flat and light

  • Work in hotel sinks or washers

  • Use clean, gentle ingredients

  • Keep clothes fresh without harsh chemicals

Perfect for quick washes on long trips or keeping swimsuits and towels clean.

Between photos, maps, travel days, and beach time — batteries drain fast.

A portable charger is essential for:

  • Airports

  • Excursions

  • Beach bags

  • Long travel days

I never travel without one.

Mom Travel Tip

Simple, healthy essentials = less stress + more presence.

When I know sun protection, safety, and comfort are covered, I can actually relax and enjoy the memories with my kids.
