Did you know that something as simple (and sweet!) as dates could help you go into labor naturally and avoid unnecessary interventions?
At Roots Wholistic Health, we love sharing research-backed, natural tools that support mamas in having smoother, more empowered births—and eating dates during pregnancy is one of our favorite tips.
📚 The Research Behind Dates and Labor
Multiple studies have shown that eating 6–8 dates per day in the final weeks of pregnancy may help:
✅ Increase cervical dilation
✅ Soften the cervix (aka ripening)
✅ Boost your body’s natural oxytocin response
✅ Shorten the first stage of labor
✅ Reduce the need for Pitocin or medical induction
✨ In one study:
Women who ate dates in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy were more dilated upon hospital admission, had a higher rate of spontaneous labor, and were less likely to need interventions than those who didn’t eat dates.¹
🗓️ When Should You Start?
To support natural labor, start eating 6–8 dates per day beginning at 36 weeks pregnant.
Choose Medjool dates if possible—they’re larger, sweeter, and easier to blend into recipes.
💡 Why Do Dates Work?
Dates are rich in:
Natural sugars to energize your uterus
Magnesium & potassium to support muscle function
Tannins, which help tone the uterus
Fiber, which helps reduce constipation (another common third-trimester complaint!)
They may also help stimulate oxytocin receptors, encouraging the body to go into labor naturally.
🍫 2 Delicious Ways to Eat Dates Daily
Dates on their own can get a little boring—so here are two fun and tasty ways to work them into your routine!

2 tbsp chia seeds
¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Roll into 1-inch balls and refrigerate.
Enjoy 2–3 per day!
2. Labor-Ready Date Smoothie

1 frozen banana
½ cup Greek yogurt or coconut yogurt
1 tbsp almond butter
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
1 cup almond or coconut milk
Dash of cinnamon

Blend all ingredients until smooth.
Sip in the morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up.
Add collagen or protein powder for extra nutrition!
