Why Baby-Led Weaning Matters: Supporting Your Baby’s Development From the First Bite

By: Dr. Alyssa McPeak

At Roots Wholistic Health, we love guiding parents through every stage of their child’s development—including the exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!) transition to solid foods. One of the most empowering ways to introduce food to your baby is through baby-led weaning. When I heard this term, I had no idea what it meant. It means...feed your baby real food!

This approach does more than just support independence—it honors your baby’s natural development, supports gut health, helps prevent picky eating, and may even reduce choking risk when done correctly.

Let’s break down what baby-led weaning really is, when to start feeding your baby based on tooth and digestive development, and what foods are best to begin with.

What Is Baby-Led Weaning?

Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a feeding method that skips purees and spoon-feeding in favor of offering whole, small, soft foods that babies can self-feed—at their pace, in their way. It encourages babies to explore textures, learn chewing skills, and listen to their body’s hunger cues from the very beginning.

Unlike traditional baby feeding approaches, BLW helps babies develop:

  • Fine motor skills

  • Oral-motor coordination - reducing gagging and choking

  • Independence and confidence

  • A positive relationship with food

Why Timing Matters: Teeth, Enzymes & Reflexes

Your baby’s teeth aren’t just for chewing—they’re signals for digestive readiness. As babies begin to cut specific teeth, their digestive enzymes also ramp up to help them properly break down and absorb nutrients.

Here’s a general guide:

👶 Before teeth:

  • Baby is not developmentally ready for solids.

  • The tongue-thrust reflex (pushing food out) is still strong.

  • Focus on breastmilk or formula only.

🍼 Around 6 months:

  • Baby may start cutting front teeth (incisors)

  • Signals readiness for soft, easily gummed foods

  • Begin introducing iron-rich and nutrient-dense whole foods

Important: If your baby hasn’t cut teeth by 9 months, it’s still important to begin offering food to preserve the oral-motor reflex needed for chewing and swallowing. This reflex begins to fade after 9 months, and waiting too long can make feeding more difficult later on:

👶 Around 9–12 months:

  • Molars and premolars begin to emerge

  • Baby can handle more complex textures and begin chewing more effectively

  • Their digestive tract is better equipped to break down proteins and grains

Best First Foods for Baby-Led Weaning (Based on Tooth Development)

Here’s a list of baby-friendly foods to try as your baby grows—and cuts more teeth:

When front teeth start cutting (6–8 months):

  • Steamed, soft sweet potato or carrots

  • Canned green beans

  • Avocado slices

  • Soft scrambled eggs (if tolerated)

  • Banana spears

  • Soft-cut fruit like mango, blueberries (cut or squished), or peaches

  • Bone broth-soaked soft veggies

As molars begin to cut (9–12 months):

  • Mashed beans or lentils

  • Soft chunks of cooked fish or chicken

  • Nut butter (thinly spread) on soft spears of food

  • Cooked quinoa or rice

  • Roasted vegetables with olive oil or ghee

Baby-Led Weaning Reduces Choking Risk (Yes, Really!)

Contrary to common fears, studies have shown that when done properly, BLW may actually reduce choking risk compared to traditional spoon feeding. Why?

  • Babies control the pace and amount of food going into their mouth

  • They learn to chew before swallowing, even without teeth

  • Gagging is a protective reflex—not choking—and helps babies learn safely

  • BLW encourages a strong swallow reflex and proper oral development

We always recommend supervising meals closely, sitting baby upright, and avoiding true choking hazards like raw apples, whole grapes, popcorn, or hard nuts.

Bonus Benefit: Preventing Picky Eating

Because BLW lets babies explore real textures and flavors from the start, it helps reduce picky eating by:

  • Exposing them to a wider variety of foods early on

  • Letting them feel in control of how they eat

  • Encouraging curiosity and positive associations with mealtime

  • Avoiding pressure-based feeding battles
